Tierra ROja
Tierra Roja is a monograph by Leobardo Bañuelos Jr that takes place in his father’s homeland, Pochotitán, Nayarit, Mexico. Titled after the landscape which is known for its distinctive red clay soil. The 72-page book documents intergenerational life on the family ranch. Themes of labor, kinship, and tradition appear throughout. From milking the cows at first light and making pajaretes to stirring fried chicharrones in a massive cast iron vessel over a make-shift fire right before the New Year started.
This book builds upon Bañuelos’ earlier project Pocho (2019. A zine documenting his time in Mexico for his grandmother’s 90th birthday, along with a super 8mm short film.
